Ashwagandha root

Withania somnifera

Why we love this botanical

A shwagandha root has an earthy, rounded aroma that immediately brings a sense of depth and calm to a cup. The gentle woody tones and mild bitterness provide structure without sharpness, making this root a natural foundation for both warm spices and floral components. In blends it acts as a quiet carrier that unites warmth, body and tranquility.

During brewing, the creamy, almost nutty undertone of ashwagandha is released slowly. The root softens rough edges and allows aromatic herbs to flow together more elegantly. Thanks to its subtle intensity, it is an ideal ingredient for evening rituals where depth is desired without dominance, and where the cup finishes with a soft, lingering roundness.

Habitat & Origin

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is native to dry, sun-rich regions of India, Pakistan and parts of North Africa. The low shrubs develop deep roots in sandy, well-drained soils where heat and wind slow growth and concentrate the root. In traditional cultivation, young plants are established for one season before the roots are harvested after the first or second winter, when they are firm, woody and aromatic. After digging, the roots are washed, cut into pieces and carefully dried. At Maison Tisane we prefer evenly cut roots that are not too finely crumbled, with a warm, clean scent, so that the cup receives a quiet, grounding depth without muddy tones.

Active compounds

Ashwagandha root contains characteristic withanolides (steroidal lactones such as withaferin A) that give the plant its deep, earthy signature. It also includes natural alkaloids, saponins and traces of iron and other minerals. This combination of constituents creates a warm, root-like complexity in a cup, especially in evening and relaxation rituals.

Ayurvedic approach

In Ayurveda, ashwagandha belongs to the warming, grounding roots that provide stability for Vata and keep Kapha gently moving. Pitta is approached with care due to the warm signature. In classical texts it received the title Vajikarana, and its name — “ashwa-gandha”, the smell and power of a horse — was symbolically tied to endurance and inner strength. Energetically, the root feels like evening soil holding warmth: deep, calming and oriented toward continuity.

Role in the blend

Firm herb (5–10%): provides structure and body to the blend without overwhelming it.

The indicated percentage refers to the approximate weight proportion of this herb within the total blend, but it can of course be adjusted to give the herb a more dominant or more subtle role.

Ashwagandha brings a deep, grounding warmth that gives blends stability and calm. It forms a natural base beneath licorice, chicory and valerian, and develops a ritual, warming depth alongside cinnamon, cardamom and ginger. Tulsi, chamomile and gentle floral elements create a refined, ceremonially quiet top layer. Ashwagandha acts as an anchor root: it softens sharp edges, tempers acidity and provides evening blends with a slow, warm finish.

Feels at home next to warm milk preparations, oat cookies, roasted pecans or maple syrup. The earthy calm softens sweetness and gives creamy textures more depth and balance.
