Astragalus root

Astragalus membranaceus

Why we love this botanical

A stragalus root has a light, honey-like earthy tone that rounds a cup subtly. The firm fibres release little colour but bring a soft, warm undercurrent that mainly provides structure. The root feels clear and calm, with a grain-like sweetness that supports other botanicals gently without drawing attention.

During brewing, astragalus develops a mild, soft depth that gives blends stability. The root acts as a neutral backbone on which fresh leaves, floral accents or warm spices can rest. Because of its modest character, it mainly brings balance: it softens bitterness, rounds acidity and adds a quiet, comforting warmth.

Habitat & Origin

Astragalus membranaceus is a perennial plant from the legume family, originating from the cool, dry highlands of northern China and Mongolia. There it grows in light, mineral-rich soils on slopes and open grasslands exposed to steady winds. Over several years the plant forms a sturdy taproot with a gentle, grain-like sweetness. In traditional cultivation, astragalus is left to grow for multiple seasons; only then are the roots harvested, peeled and cut into long, narrow slices that are sun-dried or warm-air dried. For Maison Tisane we look for evenly cut, lightly golden root slices with a clear, hay-like scent and a clean break, ensuring that the root is present yet calm in the cup.

Active compounds

Astragalus root contains a network of polysaccharides (such as astragalans), saponins (including astragalosides) and flavonoids that together shape its soft, sweet-earthy flavour. Essential trace elements and light aromatic compounds give the root a subtle honey and wood accent. In blends, astragalus contributes a rounded, comforting foundation that supports other herbs elegantly.

Ayurvedic approach

Although astragalus is not an Ayurvedic herb, its gentle honey-warm nature is energetically seen as strengthening for Vata and ordering for Kapha, without disturbing Pitta. In Chinese and Siberian traditions it was known as the “long-season root”: a root that gathers strength and aroma only after many years. That sense of slow cultivation is reflected in the cup. Energetically, astragalus feels like winter sunlight on a wooden table: calm, protective and lightly uplifting.

Role in the blend

Firm herb (5–10%): provides structure and body to the blend without overwhelming it.

The indicated percentage refers to the approximate weight proportion of this herb within the total blend, but it can of course be adjusted to give the herb a more dominant or more subtle role.

Astragalus has a honey-warm, grain-like softness that gives blends structure without taking centre stage. It pairs elegantly with ginger, turmeric and cinnamon for quiet, warming depth; with licorice and marshmallow root it creates a silky, comforting structure. Rosehip, hibiscus and apple add lively fruit layers, while chamomile, linden blossom and raspberry leaf provide a calm, friendly botanical finish. Astragalus is a connecting root: it lifts fruit, softens spices and gives floral blends a warm, layered undercurrent.

Pairs well with rice pudding, light custards, honey-based pastries and stewed pear. The honey-warm grain tone links creamy and fruity textures and gives gentle desserts a calm, rounded depth.
