Cleavers

Galium aparine

Why we love this botanical

C leavers opens with a fresh, leaf-green scent evocative of young shoots in morning air. The taste is mild, slightly herbal, and almost transparent, bringing a bright calm to the glass. There is something airy and mobile in the first impression, as if the herb makes space in the infusion. Cleavers softens pronounced botanicals and forms a soft base that makes blends feel accessible and refined.

During steeping, cleavers develops a clean, green line that keeps the infusion clear and light. The structure remains supple, with a subtle freshness that elegantly lifts heavier or more aromatic herbs. The herb acts as a distributor of tension: it makes blends less compact, airier, and more balanced. This creates a cup that is friendly, open, and precisely spicy enough to let the rest of the botanicals shine.

Habitat & Origin

Cleavers (Galium aparine) grows in light, moist forest edges, hedges, verges, and meadow transitions throughout Europe and West Asia. The plant is known for its small hooks on leaves and stems, with which it attaches itself to anything passing by. For infusions, young spring stems are cut when the plant is still juicy and the green tones are softest. Because cleavers wilt quickly, they are immediately spread out to dry in thin layers. Maison Tisane looks for fresh green, flexible pieces with a bright, grass-herbal scent—no yellowed nodes or lignified parts—so that the infusion retains a soft, airy green tone.

Active compounds

Cleavers contains fine iridoids, green flavonoids, and soft grass-like aromatic components that give a light, bright green signature. These compounds create a mild, transparent herbal layer — clean, quiet, and subtly refreshing. In blends, cleavers works as a soft lightener that rounds off sharp tones and builds a clear, botanical base.

Ayurvedic approach

Cleavers carries an airy, cool signature that mainly soothes Pitta and gives Kapha light movement. Due to its soft dryness, it can offer Vata clarity and order without irritating. In European herbal traditions, cleavers was considered a 'field weaver': a plant that attaches itself and brings subtle connection. Energetically, it feels like spring air through tall grasses — fresh, slightly astringent, and kindly structuring.

Role in the blend

Balanced herb (10–20%): creates a harmonious foundation and supports the other flavours.

The indicated percentage refers to the approximate weight proportion of this herb within the total blend, but it can of course be adjusted to give the herb a more dominant or more subtle role.

Cleavers refreshes and lightens blends from the background. The soft green tone tempers intensely floral or strongly spicy elements and makes complex mixtures airier. In combination with raspberry leaf, birch leaf, or plantain, it forms a silent green base that gives structure without forcing a pronounced taste. Cleavers makes citrus accents of lemon verbena or orange peel feel more transparent and ensures that root tones, such as nettle root or chicory, come across less heavy. It acts as a subtle distributor of tension in the pot.

Cleavers aligns with light, green dishes: spring vegetable soups, raw salads with apple, spicy quinoa with citrus, or cold potato dishes with fine herbs. The mild, grass-like tone emphasizes freshness and breaks through fat or heavy dressings. Also alongside soft cheeses, lightly smoked fish, or simple omelets, cleavers offers a clean, herbal underlayer that makes the whole lighter and more cheerful.
