Coriander leaf

Coriandrum sativum

Why we love this botanical

C oriander leaf has a fresh, green citrus spiciness with light floral accents. The fine leaves bring clarity and a soft herbal lift to an infusion. In blends, coriander leaf provides an aromatic freshness that makes the cup feel light, lively, and open.

During steeping, coriander leaf unfolds a mild, green aromatics with a subtle citrus top. The leaf rounds off heavier botanicals and gives floral and earthy tones more air. The taste is bright and balanced, ideal as a refined herbal layer in fresh or complex blends.

Habitat & Origin

Coriander (Coriandrum sativum) is grown worldwide in warm, temperate zones but feels most at home in light, well-drained loam and sandy soils around the Mediterranean and West Asia. The leaf develops its fresh, citrus-like scent especially in the cool morning hours of the spring and early summer season. For infusions, young leaves are picked before the plant bolts into flowering, because the aroma is then most elegant and clear. After picking, the leaves are air-dried and carefully sieved to remove stems and coarser material. Maison Tisane selects coriander leaf based on color, leaf fullness, and nose: an open, green citrus tone without the heavier herbal profile that arises from old harvest.

Active compounds

Coriander leaf contains linalool, decanal, and fresh citrus terpenes that ensure the bright, aromatic signature. Green leaf components give a soft herbal nuance and a clean, fresh lift. In blends, coriander leaf brings refined clarity — a light herbal gloss that allows fruit, flowers, and spices to come together more elegantly.

Ayurvedic approach

Coriander leaf is read in Ayurveda energetically as cool, lightly aromatic, and subtly ordering. It soothes Pitta, gives Kapha air, and touches Vata only gently due to its fresh, non-dry character. In Persian-Indian cuisine, coriander was considered 'garden wind': a leaf that gave dishes scent without becoming heavy. Energetically, it feels like shade in a herb terrace — clear, friendly, and refreshing without sharpness.

Role in the blend

Firm herb (5–10%): provides structure and body to the blend without overwhelming it.

The indicated percentage refers to the approximate weight proportion of this herb within the total blend, but it can of course be adjusted to give the herb a more dominant or more subtle role.

Coriander leaf refreshes blends with a green, citrus-like spiciness that lifts top notes and lightens heavy herbs. It gives mint and lemon verbena a playful clarity and softens the herbal weight of dill or cumin. With jasmine or cornflower, an aromatic garden freshness is created that keeps floral elements airy. In combination with apple, hibiscus, or rosehip, coriander leaf adds a clean green line that organizes fruitiness and gives sparkle, without becoming dominant.

Coriander leaf fits exceptionally well with fresh, light dishes: citrus salads, cucumber preparations, ceviche-like flavors, or grilled vegetables with yogurt-lime sauce. The green freshness lifts fattier structures and brings tension to creamy or soft dairy. Also with light rice dishes, coriander-lime quinoa, or soft white fish, the leaf adds elegance.
