Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo biloba

Why we love this botanical

G inkgo biloba leaf has a fresh, slightly nutty botanical scent with a subtle green bitterness. The fan-shaped leaves give a quiet, clear taste that offers a blend refinement and structure. The herb feels historic and pure, with a sober elegance that fits well in modern botanical infusions.

During steeping, ginkgo develops a soft, dry leaf tone that adds complexity without overpowering. The taste is clear and precise, ideal for giving floral or citrus-rich botanicals a calm base. The herb mainly brings balance: it softens sweet accents and makes an infusion transparent and refined.

Habitat & Origin

Ginkgo biloba, often called the living fossil, originates from East Asia and has been planted around temples and courtyards for centuries. The tree feels at home in temperate climates with cold winters and warm summers, on light, well-drained soils. In late summer, the fan leaves develop their full aromatic structure; shortly before coloring, they are harvested, carefully dried, and stripped of stems and coarse veins. Ginkgo reacts strongly to environment and air quality, which is why Maison Tisane selects only leaf from clean cultivation regions with controlled drying processes. This yields a leaf with a pure, dry-green scent and an elegant, slightly bitter structure.

Active compounds

Ginkgo biloba contains a refined mix of flavonoids and terpene lactones that shape the leafy, subtly bitter signature. These compounds provide a clear, precise flavor line with a soft, elegant dryness in the aftertaste. In infusions, they bring peace, structure, and an almost analytical clarity — a silent green tone that refines blends without dominating.

Ayurvedic approach

Ginkgo is energetically read as a cool, dry, and ordering leaf that mainly soothes Pitta and offers Kapha clarity, while Vata remains largely neutral. The fan leaves are iconic within East Asian culture, where the tree symbolizes endurance and seasonal wisdom. In infusions, ginkgo carries a quiet, analytical quality: a subtle bitter-green tone that creates space and makes the flavor profile more precise and quieter.

Role in the blend

Firm herb (5–10%): provides structure and body to the blend without overwhelming it.

The indicated percentage refers to the approximate weight proportion of this herb within the total blend, but it can of course be adjusted to give the herb a more dominant or more subtle role.

Ginkgo Biloba supports with a dry, green clarity that tempers floral sweetness and sharpens citrus accents. It makes jasmine more precise, gives lemon verbena more direction, and keeps mint light and clear. In combination with raspberry leaf or birch leaf, a quiet, analytical leaf base is created. Ginkgo acts as a refining orderer: it brings structure, balance, and a silent, elegant bitter-greenness to complex blends.

Ginkgo pairs with lightly nutty dishes, such as almond pastry, matcha desserts, or thin shortbread cookies. The subtle bitter-green tone breaks through creaminess and makes sweetness more complex. In savory spheres, it works nicely with steamed vegetables, mild tofu, or lightly spiced rice dishes, where it adds a refined, wakeful dryness.
