Mint

Mentha spicata

Why we love this botanical

M int opens with a cool, lively freshness that immediately awakens the senses. Beneath that first wave lies a green, slightly citrus-like nuance that keeps the infusion clear but friendly. The taste feels tingling without being sharp, as if fresh air is moving through the cup. Mint brings an openness to every blend that energizes without overshadowing the character of other botanicals.

During steeping, the mint tone becomes softer and more enveloping: first a cool prickle, then a green roundness that keeps the infusion light and airy. The taste remains clear and friendly, with a subtle sweetness in the aftertaste. In blends, mint provides structure and sparkle simultaneously, giving floral, earthy, or citrus-rich botanicals more breathing room without losing their identity.

Habitat & Origin

Mint (Mentha spicata) achieves its most aromatic character in moist, sun-drenched valleys with humus-rich soils. The plant forms creeping rhizomes and can be harvested multiple times per season. For infusions, young shoots are picked just before flowering, when the essential oils are most clearly present. The leaves are immediately separated from stems and air-dried to prevent oxidation. Maison Tisane chooses mint that is vividly green, has resilient leaves, and retains an open, fresh nose—without earthy tones that arise from late harvesting.

Active compounds

Mint contains primarily carvone and limonene, supplemented by light phenols and green aromatic components. These compounds together form the bright, sweet-fresh spiciness and the cool nose so characteristic of mint. In the cup, they translate to a clean, tingling structure with a soft sweet undertone. The combination makes mint a natural lightener in blends: refreshing without hardness, aromatic without drowning out others.

Ayurvedic approach

Mint belongs in Ayurveda to the cool, aromatic leaves that refresh Pitta and open Kapha; Vata is approached with mildness due to the airy sharpness. In Mediterranean and North African rituals, mint was considered a 'house friend': an herb that gave every room scent and hospitality. That cultural warmth contrasts beautifully with its cool aromatics. Energetically, mint feels like shade over cold water: clear, tingling, and inviting renewal.

Role in the blend

Balanced herb (10–20%): creates a harmonious foundation and supports the other flavours.

The indicated percentage refers to the approximate weight proportion of this herb within the total blend, but it can of course be adjusted to give the herb a more dominant or more subtle role.

Mint refreshes blends by lifting top notes and framing fruity or floral ingredients clearly. It makes lemon balm longer-winged and gives hibiscus a sparkling edge. With blueberry, a modern, red-fresh tension is created, while mint makes the warmer depth of rooibos or cinnamon airier. In combination with lemongrass and orange peel, mint creates a clean, friendly citrus-herb profile that makes a blend accessible and energetic.

Mint pairs beautifully with fruit desserts such as watermelon salad, strawberries with cream, lemon tart, and yogurt with honey. The fresh coolness breaks through fat and sweet and lifts fruity acids. In savory dishes, mint works great with lamb, bulgur, falafel, roasted carrots, and light rice dishes, where it offers a clarifying herbal layer.
