Cardamom pods

Elettaria cardamomum

Why we love this botanical

C ardamom pods provide a fresh, aromatic warmth with citrus tones and a subtle floral underlayer. The green pods burst with volatile oils that make an infusion clear, spicy, and elegant. Cardamom feels fresh and warm at the same time, lifting both sweet and earthy botanicals.

During steeping, the pods open their complex aroma: citrus, eucalyptus-like freshness, and a soft, warm sweetness. The structure remains light and refined. Cardamom gives a blend tension and roundness, connecting spices, flowers, and fruit in a single aromatic line.

Habitat & Origin

Green cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum) grows in the misty, rainy mountain forests of Southern India and Sri Lanka, where the plants receive constant humidity in semi-shade. The rhizome sends up clusters with pods that ripen slowly under leaf cover and morning mist. Pod harvest is done by hand, often daily, because each pod becomes aromatic at its own pace. Immediate drying at low temperatures prevents the essential oils from evaporating and preserves the fresh citrus-spiciness. Maison Tisane chooses bright green, tightly closed pods that feel heavy for their size—a sign of full seed chambers and maximum aromatic power.

Active compounds

Cardamom contains cineole, limonene, and a rich palette of volatile oils that together create the fresh, warm-aromatic signature. These compounds open immediately in hot water and give a silky citrus-spiciness with an elegant lift. In blends, cardamom works as a clear aromatic line that brings warmth and freshness together in a refined way.

Ayurvedic approach

Cardamom is seen in Ayurveda as a refined, warm-aromatic seed that lightens Kapha and gives Vata direction, while Pitta is hardly irritated. In South Indian and Arab traditions, cardamom was considered 'breath seed': a spice that gave scent to ritual drinks and hospitable dishes. That cultural role resonates in infusions. Energetically, cardamom feels like mountain air passing through pines: clear, warm, and softly uplifting.

Role in the blend

Strong herb (2.5–5%): contributes noticeably to the flavour profile and should be dosed with care.

The indicated percentage refers to the approximate weight proportion of this herb within the total blend, but it can of course be adjusted to give the herb a more dominant or more subtle role.

Cardamom pods refresh and support at the same time: they bring a bright, citrus-like spiciness that lifts heavy spices and refines floral tones. In combination with ginger and cinnamon, a refined chai structure is created, while cardamom makes the honey warmth of rooibos airier. With lemongrass or orange peel, cardamom gives a layered citrus profile that makes blends feel elegant and modern. Rose petals and chamomile get more definition, as the fragrant pods organize and clarify floral sweetness.

Cardamom feels at home in cardamom buns, spicy cake, rice pudding, panna cotta with citrus, and desserts with pear or apricot. The fresh spice tone makes creamy and buttery structures lighter and more exciting. Also in savory context, such as in carrot soup, lentil stew, or fragrant rice, cardamom gives a subtle, gastronomic lift without overpowering the dish.
