Mentha piperita

Why we love this botanical

P eppermint opens with a lively, menthol-rich freshness that immediately makes the glass clear and cool. Beneath the initial prickle lies a deep green, almost balmy tone that rounds off and softens the scent. The taste feels open, clean, and precise — never sharp or overwhelming. Peppermint gives a blend a fresh, energetic structure that creates space and at the same time brings a refined, modern clarity to the infusion.

During steeping, the mint tone first becomes powerful and tingling, after which a warmer, green underlayer gently unfolds. The infusion remains light, crystal clear, and friendly, with a long, cooling aftertaste. Peppermint lifts citrus, floral elements, and earthy herbs without disturbing their character. This creates a cup that feels tight, refreshing, and well-balanced, both in a warm infusion and in a chilled variation.

Habitat & Origin

Peppermint (Mentha piperita) is a natural hybrid of water mint and spearmint and is grown mainly in temperate regions of Europe, North America, and Asia. The plant thrives in moist, nutrient-rich soils along streams, irrigation channels, and flat fields with ample sunlight. For infusions, the harvest time is crucial: leaves are cut just before or at the beginning of flowering, when the menthol content in the glandular hairs is at its highest. After harvesting, the stems are briefly post-dried, and then the leaves are stripped from the stalks and dried in airy layers. Maison Tisane selects peppermint based on color and nose: deep green leaf with a cool, sharp but clean mint scent, without musty or earthy undertones.

Active compounds

Peppermint contains menthol, menthone, and fresh aromatic terpenes that together form the powerful, cool-tingling mint expression. These compounds open immediately in warm water and give a bright, sparkling aroma profile with a long, clean finish. In blends, peppermint brings focus, energy, and a modern, crystal-clear freshness.

Ayurvedic approach

Peppermint is seen in Ayurveda as a distinctly cool, aromatic leaf that relieves Pitta, opens Kapha, and keeps Vata calm as long as the dose remains mild. Its menthol freshness was associated in European and Arab cultures with hospitality and fresh clarity: mint bundles hung at entrances or fountains. Energetically, peppermint feels like night coolness over stone — tingling, clarifying, and lightly activating without overwhelming.

Role in the blend

Strong herb (2.5–5%): contributes noticeably to the flavour profile and should be dosed with care.

The indicated percentage refers to the approximate weight proportion of this herb within the total blend, but it can of course be adjusted to give the herb a more dominant or more subtle role.

Peppermint refreshes with a crystal-clear menthol tone that pulls top notes upward and organizes warm herbs. It makes rooibos and cinnamon lighter and gives lemongrass and lemon verbena a modern, sparkling precision. In combination with hibiscus, a red-fresh tension is created, while peppermint clearly outlines floral botanicals like chamomile and jasmine. Peppermint acts as a catalyst: it opens the palate, gives blends rhythm, and keeps sweeter or heavier elements in balance.

Peppermint fits excellently with chocolate—dark, milk, or white—where it freshly cuts through fat and sweetness. Also delicious with lemon desserts, strawberries, yogurt, panna cotta, and fruit salads. In savory spheres, peppermint lifts dishes like couscous, lamb, pea puree, and grilled zucchini by adding a clarifying, cool herbal layer.
