Rosa damascena petala

Why we love this botanical

R ose petals are for us the embodiment of soft refinement. A flower that does not shout but whispers, with a scent that briefly slows down time. In the nose, a delicate perfume of floral sweetness opens up, subtly fresh and lightly fruity. In the cup, the infusion turns soft gold-pink, elegant and transparent, like a glimpse of morning light. We love rose petals for their ability to lift a blend: not as a dominant player, but as a fragrant veil that softens and rounds everything.

Rose petals give a blend a poetic softness: mildly floral, slightly sweet, with a thin, elegant bitter tone that offers structure without overpowering. The intensity is medium, but the sensory effect is large: rose provides roundness, increases accessibility, and brings tension between warm herbs and fresh citrus notes. In our blending studio, we use rose petals to give blends depth and refinement—a silent companion that makes the whole feel more coherent, luxurious, and almost silky.

Habitat & Origin

Rose petals for infusions usually come from Rosa damascena and related fragrant varieties from Turkey, Bulgaria, and Iran. These roses grow on sunny hills and terraces with calcareous, well-drained soils and cool nights, which enhances the accumulation of aromatic compounds. During the flowering season, the flowers are picked by hand in the early morning, even before the sun fully warms the petals. The petals are immediately separated from the flower and dried in thin layers to retain perfume and color. Maison Tisane selects rose petals based on origin, color, and scent: deep-colored, velvety petals with a pure, floral nose, without perfume-like additives or sugared edges.

Active compounds

Rose petals contain aromatic oils — especially citronellol, geraniol, and nerol — that create the recognizable soft, floral, and lightly citrus-fresh scent. Flavonoids and fine tannins provide a subtle bitterness and an elegant structure. In infusions, rose petals bring a silky soft, poetic floral tone that rounds off blends with clarity and refinement without ever becoming heavy.

Ayurvedic approach

Rose petals are counted in Ayurveda among the cool, harmonizing flowers that mainly soothe Pitta and give Vata soft stability, while Kapha receives lightness. In Persian and Indian traditions, the rose was considered the 'night scent of the heart': a flower that symbolized subtle emotionality and refinement in rituals and poetry. Energetically, rose feels like a velvet-soft breeze — floral, cooling, and elegantly softening.

Role in the blend

Firm herb (5–10%): provides structure and body to the blend without overwhelming it.

The indicated percentage refers to the approximate weight proportion of this herb within the total blend, but it can of course be adjusted to give the herb a more dominant or more subtle role.

Rose petals support by bringing floral softness and contrast through subtle freshness that organizes warmer spices. They elevate chamomile, linden blossom, and lemon balm to an elegant blossom arch and give hibiscus a poetic rounding. With cinnamon or cardamom, a refined dessert-like profile is created, while rose petal gives fruity botanicals like apple, blueberry, and rosehip more depth and perfume. Rose acts as aesthetic glue between citrus, flowers, and soft spices.

Rose petals shine with almond pastries, panna cotta, meringue, white chocolate, pistachio cake, raspberries, and lychee. The delicate blossom tone lifts creamy desserts and gives fruit clarity and romance. Also with subtle savory dishes—such as goat cheese, saffron rice, or roasted carrots—rose adds an aromatic refinement.
