Yarrow

Achillea millefolium

Why we love this botanical

Y arrow has an aromatic, green-herbal profile with fine resin and meadow-flower accents. The leaf and flower contribute a gentle bitterness and a clear, almost silvery herbal tone. In a cup, yarrow adds depth and structure, making a blend feel more mature and complex without becoming heavy.

During brewing, yarrow develops an elegant, lightly bitter undercurrent that gives floral and citrus botanicals more tension. It softens excessive sweetness and makes herbaceous blends more precise. The herb acts as a refining, lightly astringent note that sharpens the lines of a blend and lends the finish a dry, elegant lift.

Habitat & Origin

Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) is a robust meadow herb native to Europe and large parts of Asia, well adapted to temperate climates of North America as well. It thrives in sunny, moderately nutrient-rich soils along dikes, hay meadows and rough verges, where its fine, feathery leaves and white or soft pink flower clusters are a familiar sight. For herbal use, the aerial parts — flower tops with a bit of leaf — are harvested in early to mid-summer, when the umbels are fully open but still fresh in colour. The stems are cut and dried loosely in bundles or on racks to preserve the resinous, silver-green herbal quality. At Maison Tisane we select yarrow based on fine leaf texture, bright flower colour and a dry, clean aroma: no yellowed heads, no coarse woody pieces, ensuring a cup that remains elegant and exact.

Active compounds

Yarrow contains essential oils, bitter sesquiterpene lactones and flavonoids that together provide its characteristic herbal and lightly bitter structure. These components give the cup a dry, elegant backbone on which floral and citrus accents shine.

Ayurvedic approach

In Ayurvedic energetics, yarrow holds a refined, almost silvery herbal quality: cool enough to soften Pitta, aromatic enough to guide Kapha, but dry and lightly bitter, calling for attentiveness with Vata. In European tradition, yarrow was known as “soldier’s herb,” associated with sharpness, alertness and field clarity. Energetically it carries this same image — a refining, lightly astringent tone that orders and sharpens the flavour landscape.

Role in the blend

Strong herb (2.5–5%): contributes noticeably to the flavour profile and should be dosed with care.

The indicated percentage refers to the approximate weight proportion of this herb within the total blend, but it can of course be adjusted to give the herb a more dominant or more subtle role.

Yarrow contrasts blends with a refined, dry-green bitter structure that tightens and clarifies floral and citrus-rich elements. It gives chamomile direction, makes lemon verbena more aromatic and keeps mint in check. In combination with sage or ginkgo, it creates a mature, herb-fresh profile that lends blends elegance and tension.

Pairs beautifully with roasted artichoke, citrus marinades, light broth-like dishes and autumn salads with pear. The silver-green bitterness lightens sweetness and fat and brings nuance.
