Passiflora incarnata

Why we love this botanical

P assion flower has a soft, green-floral scent with light hay and herb accents and a calm, summery atmosphere. The aerial parts give infusions a mild, soothing herbal tone with a round, light straw-like character. In blends, passion flower feels enveloping and serene: an herb that gently supports silence and slowing down.

During steeping, a clear straw-yellow brew is created with a soft, leafy structure and a friendly, light hay-like aroma. Passion flower softens sharp herbs, makes citrus blends calmer, and gives floral or rooibos-based mixtures a calm, somewhat grounded undercurrent. The herb is ideally suited for evening and late afternoon rituals where you want to let the day slowly exhale.

Habitat & Origin

Passion flower (Passiflora incarnata) is native to warm, temperate regions of North and Central America, where the plant climbs over bushes and forest edges. For infusions, leaves and young stems are harvested during multiple rounds in the growing period, when the material is still supple and freshly aromatic. The parts are immediately sorted and slowly dried to retain their soft hay and herbal tones. Maison Tisane selects passion flower based on leaf consistency, green color, and a light, straw-like scent for a calm, rounded infusion.

Active compounds

Passion flower contains a soft mix of flavonoids, light alkaloids, and straw-like aromatic components. These compounds create a calm, green-floral herbal layer with a friendly, light hay-like character. The subtle bitters and leafy tones give the infusion a quiet, even structure that dictates atmosphere rather than emphatic taste. In blends, passion flower works as an enveloping background, rounding off sharp edges and giving the whole a soft, evening mildness.

Ayurvedic approach

Passion flower has a cool, inward-turning signature that mainly soothes Pitta and softly orders Kapha in Ayurvedic energetics, while Vata is approached neutrally. In South American indigenous traditions, the plant was considered a 'twilight climber': an herb that opens in soft light and symbolizes rest. Energetically, passion flower carries that evening feeling — leafy serenity, a straw-like mildness, and a subtly descending movement that rounds off the flavor profile.

Role in the blend

Balanced herb (10–20%): creates a harmonious foundation and supports the other flavours.

The indicated percentage refers to the approximate weight proportion of this herb within the total blend, but it can of course be adjusted to give the herb a more dominant or more subtle role.

Passion flower supports blends with a soft, leafy calm that rounds off sharp herbs and gives floral elements depth. It makes chamomile and linden blossom rounder and tempers the citrus brightness of lemongrass. With rooibos, a soothing, warm underlayer is created, while passion flower gives mint and lemon balm more coherence. In combination with licorice root or marshmallow root, the blend becomes extra enveloping and particularly suitable for evening rituals.

Passion flower pairs beautifully with desserts with honey, yogurt, peach, apricot, or soft vanilla tones. The soothing, hay-like green tone makes fruit warmer and creamy preparations softer and more elegant. Also with rice pudding, light custards, or simple shortbread cookies, passion flower brings balance and a refined, relaxed rounding.
