Lemongrass

Cymbopogon citratus

Why we love this botanical

L emongrass opens with a lively citral brightness that immediately makes the cup feel fresh and spacious. Beneath that sparkle lies a soft, grassy base that keeps the aroma rounded and friendly. The first impression is sunny, light and inviting, as if a window has been thrown open. Lemongrass feels energetic without being sharp and gives a blend a natural lift that is both invigorating and refined.

During brewing, lemongrass unfolds in layers: first a volatile lime-like note, then a warm citrus sweetness that adds depth to the cup. The structure stays rounded and supple, without the tight acidity that can appear in other citrus botanicals. The herb acts as a connecting link in blends: it brightens fresh components, softens spice and gives floral elements a light, elegant frame that brings the whole into balance.

Habitat & Origin

Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) is native to the tropics of South and Southeast Asia, where it grows in sunny fields, along field margins and at the edges of gardens in airy, well-drained sandy soils. The plant forms dense clumps of narrow aromatic leaves and firm, citral-rich stalks. During the growing season the stalks are cut several times, each time just above the root so the plant can reshoot. For drying, the stalks are sliced into diagonal rings and gently warmed so the citral freshness is preserved without coarse grassiness. At Maison Tisane we select lemongrass that is light green in colour, without woody cores and with an open, lime-like aroma — ideal for a clear, soft citrus line in the blend.

Active compounds

Lemongrass is rich in citral, citronellal and other fresh citrus compounds that open with a bright, sparkling fragrance. The plant provides a light, clean lift with a soft grassy undertone — as if you open a window to cool morning air. In blends, lemongrass contributes aromatic clarity that lifts everything around it.

Ayurvedic approach

In Ayurveda, lemongrass is regarded as a gently warming, clarifying herb that especially sets Kapha in motion and gives Vata a soft, guiding warmth. The fresh citral tones are associated with purity and alertness without disturbing Pitta. In Southeast Asian traditions, lemongrass was seen as the “kitchen scent of the morning” — the moment the day is opened. Energetically it brings that same sparkle: clear, ordering and warmly uplifting in a light way.

Role in the blend

Firm herb (5–10%): provides structure and body to the blend without overwhelming it.

The indicated percentage refers to the approximate weight proportion of this herb within the total blend, but it can of course be adjusted to give the herb a more dominant or more subtle role.

Lemongrass refreshes blends with a sparkling citral tone that elevates both warm spices and floral elements. It lifts ginger and cinnamon to a lighter, aromatic height and gives mint and lemon balm a transparent, modern freshness. In combination with hibiscus or rosehip, lemongrass softens acidity without weakening it. It acts as a bringer of brightness, weaving together structure, rhythm and citrus layers.

Works well alongside coconut rice, prawns with lime, yoghurt–lime desserts or fruit salads. The citral freshness cuts through fat and lifts tropical sweetness.
