Nettle root

Urtica dioica

Why we love this botanical

N ettle root has an earthy, warm woody tone that gives infusions depth and a soft, rounded base. Compared to the leaf, the flavour is fuller and more subtly bitter, with a mild spiciness that provides body to the cup. In blends, the root serves as a foundation on which both floral and fresh botanicals can rest beautifully.

During brewing, a creamy, lightly earthy nuance is released that makes the cup calm and balanced. The root tempers sharpness and helps give more complex blends a quiet sense of continuity. Thanks to its gentle intensity, nettle root contributes stability without becoming dominant.

Habitat & Origin

The root of stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) grows in humus-rich, lightly moist soils throughout Europe and Asia, often along stream banks, forest edges and old farmyards. The taproots branch shallowly but firmly and store nutrients over the course of the growing season. In early autumn, when the above-ground parts begin to die back, the plant withdraws its energy into the root. This is the moment when the roots are richest in aromatic and structural compounds. After digging, they are washed, divided into pieces and dried at low temperature so that the earthy, warm tones are preserved. For Maison Tisane we choose roots that are clean, fibrous and lightly woody, with a dry break and no muddy odour — a guarantee of a clear, quiet cup.

Active compounds

Nettle root contains a rich palette of lignans, sterols and gentle bitter compounds that together shape the root’s deep, earthy character. These constituents give the cup a calm, warm foundation with a subtle woody accent. In blends, the root mainly contributes body and a sense of earthy equilibrium, without becoming overpowering.

Ayurvedic approach

Nettle root has an earthy, quiet warmth that in Ayurvedic energetics is seen as especially balancing for Pitta and gently structuring for Kapha. Because the root is less light and dry than the leaf, Vata remains largely neutral. In old European practices, the root was viewed as part of the plant’s depth cycle: the drawing back of strength before winter. Energetically, this translates into a soothing, supportive undercurrent that symbolises stability and continuity.

Role in the blend

Firm herb (5–10%): provides structure and body to the blend without overwhelming it.

The indicated percentage refers to the approximate weight proportion of this herb within the total blend, but it can of course be adjusted to give the herb a more dominant or more subtle role.

Nettle root supports blends with a deep, earthy warmth that rounds off sharp spices and anchors floral elements. It gives ginger, cinnamon and valerian root a calmer, more interwoven structure and tempers the sweetness of linden blossom or chamomile. In combination with rooibos or chicory root, a mature, grounding foundation emerges. Nettle root acts as a quiet carrier: it gives blends stability, depth and a long, tranquil finish.

Pairs nicely with puffed grains, nut breads and light caramel desserts. The earthy, warm undertone lends sweetness more maturity and makes nutty flavours rounder and deeper.
