Strawberry leaf

Fragariae folium

Why we love this botanical

S trawberry leaf brings a gentle green freshness with a hint of sweet fruit. Traditionally the leaf is harvested after flowering, when its aroma is at its purest. In a cup it offers a rounded, light body that supports other botanicals with elegance. It is a subtle herb that provides structure and calm in a blend without ever dominating.

In the glass, strawberry leaf unfolds slowly: a light herbaceousness, a touch of woodland and an almost velvety softness. It makes a herbal cup accessible for everyday drinking—especially when you want something refined that is neither too sweet nor too strong. It combines effortlessly and forms a quiet backbone in soft green compositions.

Habitat & Origin

Strawberry leaf comes from both wild and cultivated strawberry plants that naturally grow along light forest edges, slopes and open spaces in Europe and Western Asia. The plant prefers humus-rich, well-drained soils with filtered sunlight, forming dense mats under shrubs and trees. Today strawberries are grown worldwide in temperate gardens and small-scale cultivation. For botanical use the leaves are harvested after flowering, when the leaf tissue is firm and aromatic. At Maison Tisane we select batches with fresh green leaves and a clean, soft scent; the leaves are dried gently so their natural structure and green character remain recognisable in the cup.

Active compounds

Strawberry leaf is rich in gentle tannins and flavonoids (such as quercetin and kaempferol) that give it a lightly astringent yet friendly character. It also contains traces of vitamin C, organic fruit acids and minerals, contributing to the fresh green tone in the cup. The combination of leaf green and fine aromatic compounds makes strawberry leaf an elegant, softly fruity base in botanical blends.

Ayurvedic approach

In both European herb traditions and Ayurveda, strawberry leaf was seen as a cooling, ordering leaf that brings clarity after rich meals or warm days. Its light astringency offered Pitta and Kapha a sense of air and structure, while Vata approaches the leaf with attention. Interestingly, the leaf used to be consumed more often than the fruit itself: hunters and herders carried it as a “forest-edge tea” for its simple, refreshing character. Energetically it feels like morning light through foliage: quiet, clarifying and softly returning to balance.

Role in the blend

Base or harmonising herb (30–80%): forms the main body of the blend and brings the other ingredients into balance.

The indicated percentage refers to the approximate weight proportion of this herb within the total blend, but it can of course be adjusted to give the herb a more dominant or more subtle role.

Strawberry leaf forms a quiet green backbone for other botanicals to lean on. It pairs beautifully with lemon balm, lemon verbena, elderflower, rose petal and other gentle blossoms that lift its subtle fruitiness. Mint and raspberry leaf offer airy brightness, while light fruit peels (apple, lemon, orange) refresh its woodland tone. Strawberry leaf is an ideal structure-builder: it softens acidity, rounds spiciness and gives blends a calm, balanced green foundation.

Pairs nicely with light pastries such as shortbread, lemon tart or raspberry compote. The green freshness cuts through buttery richness and lifts soft red fruit without overpowering it.
