Valerian root

Valeriana officinalis

Why we love this botanical

V alerian root has a deep, earthy scent with warm, woody and slightly sweet-spicy nuances. The root feels immediately calming and heavy in aroma, with an almost musty, forest-floor-like undertone that gives an enveloping calm in infusions. In blends, valerian is a quiet but powerful foundation.

During steeping, a round, dark-earthy infusion creates a soft, almost creamy texture. The taste is dry, warm, and subtly bitter in the finish. Valerian root tempers sharp herbs, makes floral components deeper, and gives evening and winter blends an anchor of peace, warmth, and grounding.

Habitat & Origin

Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) grows in moist meadows, brook valleys, and light forest edges in cool regions of Europe and Asia. The root develops its earthy, warm scent only after several growing seasons and is harvested in late autumn, washed, cut, and dried slowly to retain volatile compounds. Maison Tisane selects firm, fragrant root pieces with a round earthy scent, without musty tones.

Active compounds

Valerian root contains valepotriates, warm sesquiterpenes, and earthy aromatic oils that together form the deep, characteristically warm root profile. These compounds give infusions a round, softening texture with a subtly bitter, forest-like undertone. In blends, valerian acts as a quiet anchor root that brings warmth, depth, and a calm, evening-like grounding.

Ayurvedic approach

Valerian root is seen in Ayurveda energetically as cool, heavy, and inward-turning: a grounding root that mainly offers Vata stability and Pitta cooling rest. Kapha is approached with mildness due to the compact, warm undertone. In European tradition, valerian was known as a 'night root', associated with domesticity and the transition to silence. Energetically, valerian feels like evening ground slowly releasing its warmth — deep, enveloping, and directing towards rest.

Role in the blend

Very strong herb (1–2.5%): only small amounts are needed, as the herb can quickly become overpowering.

The indicated percentage refers to the approximate weight proportion of this herb within the total blend, but it can of course be adjusted to give the herb a more dominant or more subtle role.

Valerian root supports blends with a deep, earthy warmth that mainly provides structure and carrying capacity. It makes floral botanicals darker and rounder, softens the heat of ginger, and brings rooibos into a calmer spectrum. In combination with cinnamon, a soft, spicy evening tone is created, while valerian gives root-rich blends a velvety foundation. It acts as an anchor: stabilizing, deepening, and calming without drowning out the rest.

Valerian root feels at home with warm desserts like honey rice, nut cake, gingerbread, spicy custard, and dark chocolate. The earthy, warm tone softens sweetness and adds depth. Also alongside savory dishes like roasted root vegetables, soft cheeses, or broths, valerian provides a quiet, comforting underlayer.
