Orange peel

Citrus sinensis pericarpium

Why we love this botanical

O range peel brings a sunny, round citrus scent with a soft sweetness and a hint of bitterness from the rind. In infusions, the dried zest provides a warm, marmalade-like citrus layer that is friendlier and deeper than pure lemon. The profile feels inviting, homely, yet refined.

During steeping, the aromatic oils and soft bitters dissolve slowly, yielding an infusion with a layered citrus structure: first bright and fresh, then warm, slightly sweet, and subtly dry. Orange peel connects floral botanicals with spices, rounds off acids, and gives fruity blends a mature, lightly candied citrus note.

Habitat & Origin

Oranges (Citrus sinensis) grow in subtropical and Mediterranean climate zones where warm days, cool nights, and calcareous soils ensure a high concentration of aromatic oils in the peel. The outer orange zest is harvested in winter and dried slowly to preserve perfume and color. Maison Tisane selects peels with a bright orange tint, open citrus aroma, and no wax layers, so the infusion gets a warm, layered citrus tone.

Active compounds

Orange peels contain limonene, myrcene, and linalool — aromatic citrus oils that carry the warm, sweet-fresh scent. Soft bitters and pigments provide structure and a slightly marmalade-like layering. In infusions, orange peel brings a sunny, inviting citrus warmth that elegantly connects floral, fruity, and herbal elements.

Ayurvedic approach

Orange peel is placed in Ayurveda with the warm, aromatically clarifying peels that set Kapha in motion and give Vata soft direction, while Pitta remains largely neutral. In Mediterranean ports, citrus zest was considered 'sun peel': a scent that brightened up trade goods and rooms. That cultural sunniness echoes in infusions. Energetically, orange peel feels like morning light on fruit crates — warm, fresh, ordering, and softly cheering.

Role in the blend

Firm herb (5–10%): provides structure and body to the blend without overwhelming it.

The indicated percentage refers to the approximate weight proportion of this herb within the total blend, but it can of course be adjusted to give the herb a more dominant or more subtle role.

Orange peel refreshes and supports by balancing warmth and bitterness elegantly. It creates a sunny, marmalade-like citrus warmth that opens floral botanicals and rounds off herbal elements. It lifts rooibos, cinnamon, and cardamom to a layered, winter-citrus elegance, while giving hibiscus and rose hip a bright, fruity structure. In combination with lemon balm and mint, a clarifying citrus-herb arch is created. Orange peel acts as a bridge between sweet, warm, and fresh, giving blends an inviting roundness.

Orange peel combines beautifully with almond pastries, chocolate (white, milk, or dark), cheesecake, lemon cake, panna cotta, and sweet bread dough. The warm citrus tones lighten buttery structures and give tension to creamy desserts. Also with savory dishes like fennel, roasted carrots, couscous, or chicken with honey, orange peel forms an aromatic, sunny counter-color.
