Raspberry leaf

Rubus idaeus

Why we love this botanical

R aspberry leaf surprises with a soft, green aroma reminiscent of young tea leaves rather than sweet fruit. The taste is round, slightly herbal, and very subtly astringent, with a calm, leafy freshness. In infusions, raspberry leaf forms a quiet base that gives blends an almost tea-like feeling, but completely botanical.

During steeping, a clear, straw-yellow infusion emerges with a refined, dry leaf structure and a mild, soft aftertaste. Raspberry leaf softens floral components and gives fruity botanicals more backbone. The herb acts as a silent supporter: it makes a blend more elegant and drinks like a quiet, plant-based tea.

Habitat & Origin

Raspberry (Rubus idaeus) is a sub-shrub from temperate regions of Europe and Asia, feeling at home along forest edges, clearings, and light riverbanks. The shrub roots in airy, humus-rich soils and forms long, flexible stems with softly hairy leaves. For herbal tea, not the fruits but the leaves are used: these are typically harvested after flowering, when they are firm and the venation is fully developed. The stems are cut, leaves stripped from the vines, and then dried at low temperatures to retain the green, tea-like scent. Maison Tisane selects raspberry leaf that is matte to dark green, with intact veins and minimal crushed material. This gives a quiet, leafy structure with a refined dryness in the cup.

Active compounds

Raspberry leaf contains tannins, flavonoids, and light aromatic acids that ensure the soft astringent structure and the green, tea-like taste. These compounds give the infusion a quiet, dry backbone and a clean aftertaste.

Ayurvedic approach

Raspberry leaf has a cool, dry leafiness that mainly soothes Pitta and elegantly gives direction to Kapha in Ayurveda. Vata is approached with mildness due to the dry, tea-like structure. In European traditions, raspberry was considered a 'forest edge plant': a companion of paths, edges, and clearings. Energetically, the leaf carries that quality of transition — softly ordering, slightly astringent, and connected to the rhythm between inside and outside.

Role in the blend

Base or harmonising herb (30–80%): forms the main body of the blend and brings the other ingredients into balance.

The indicated percentage refers to the approximate weight proportion of this herb within the total blend, but it can of course be adjusted to give the herb a more dominant or more subtle role.

Raspberry leaf supports blends with a quiet, tea-like leaf structure that brings together floral, citrus-rich, and fruity botanicals. It softens the sweet-floral tones of rose petal and linden blossom, gives hibiscus and rose hip a more elegant acid curve, and offers mint and lemon balm a balanced green base. Raspberry leaf acts as a harmonizing carrier: it rounds off, organizes, and makes complex blends friendly, supple, and finely layered.

Ideal with almond pastry, fresh red fruit, light custards, or shortbread cookies. The soft dry wood tone keeps sweetness in balance and gives fruit more definition.
